Noises (2002)

The sirens...sang...in a way that...only implied in which direction lay the true sources of the song...this song... was a form of navigation... it was a distance...

Maurice Blanchot,
The Song of the Sirens

The works in the series Noises (2002) and Song of the Siren (2002) are based on three or four found images and follow simple transformations in stepped sequences (SotS is in an unfinished state). They set out to explore the creation of multiple versions of the same image which can each be manipulated in sequence to allow a recorded passage through a thinking process. This can become fairly complex and because all the images in a group will have a 'family resemblance' they can be seen as a genetically formed set. Of course, this process is not limited to one direction and need not be seen as strictly linear.

There is a certain logic to image making. By this I mean two things 1/ the envisaged end result is most often different from the actual final one, and 2/ the evolving work is a dialogue between the artist and the work itself.

It is this internal logic that is followed in these pieces. More than that, the construction process becomes visible and is the subject of the works.

In conjunction with the step process, the images are constructed in layers. These layers can be related by using machine procedures and Boolean logical formulas which combine the overlaid images in different relationships of colour, tone etc.

The sequences of images, along with the visibly layered structures, give a notional (virtual) 3 dimensional and temporal world of relationships.
